Rules
MISSION STATEMENT: To create an environment that is conducive to learning and encourage students to utilize all their resources to expand their learning experience while here at Santa Monica College! We provide flexible scheduling and always put tutoring before all other assigned duties. Moreover, when not tutoring, you will be expected to do other Defining Wizard duties before personal items such as studying for classes.
General Guidelines
- If you're scheduled alone, make sure students seeking assistance are helped.
- Have new students seeking help complete a registration form. This provides important contact information about our students.
- Maintain accurate time sheets. Sign your time cards immediately upon receipt (check your folders regularly. Also, turn them in on time. If you fail to do this, payment will be delayed by two weeks.)
- Check your email and tutor training website for any announcements or assignments. Greet students as they come into the Defining Wizard. Many first-time students need assistance in finding appropriate resources. Try to make them feel welcome.
- Adhere to your schedule. Arrive on time and do not stay over (unless cleared to do so from a the Defining Wizard ).
- If you cannot make it to work, call the Defining Wizard AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (310-709-8827). Excessive absenteeism will result in dismissal. Disciplinary records will be kept on your ESE (Employee Status Evaluation) Sheets.
- Do not comment on Instructors' methods. You are a tutor to support the Instructor's methods and assist the student in understanding the Instructor's methods.
- Tutor only classes and subjects that you have been cleared to tutor. You are usually not cleared to tutor classes in which you are currently enrolled and courses you haven't pass on the Proficiency Test.
- Be visible. When you aren't tutoring, a DW Representative should know when and where you are tutoring Defining Wizard clients at all times. Remain visible in the Defining Wizard.
- You are allowed to use Defining Wizard computers ONLY during slow times. However, if there are only a few machines available, please remain off the computers so that students will know, upon entering the Center, that there are available computer resources.
- Please note that you are encouraged to bring your homework. Since some tutoring is not appointment based, some days are slower than others, and/or your appointment doesn't show up, you will often have time to complete homework while on duty.
- We look forward to getting to know you!
- No Food and Drink are allowed in the Defining Wizard.
